A STRATEGIC INFORMATION SYSTEM AND PLANNING MODEL FOR MARINE PARK MANAGEMENT: THE CASE OF NORTHERN SPORADES – MEDSPA

Duration: 1989-1991

Scientific Responsible: Prof. Maria Giaoutzi (E-mail: giaoutsi@central.ntua.gr)

The Project Objectives

During the last years there is a growing interest on the negative impacts of various activities, such as tourism, recreation activities, intensive land use and mining activities, on the environment. Such activities are considered as potential threats to the quality of the environment in case that no action is undertaken for the control of their negative impacts on the environment.
An interesting example of the sustainability issue is the area of Northern Sporades, which is the subject of this project.
The aim of this project is the development of an integrated evaluation system, which consists of a Strategic Model for land and marine management and a Dynamic Decision Support Model for policy making. The whole system is also supported by an updated Data Base and an International Research Centre for the Protection of ‘Monachus-Monachus” as well as Information in the field of marine parks.
