Panayiotis Sophronides is a PhD Candidate and researcher at the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Sophronides holds a Diploma in Rural and Surveying Engineering from NTUA and a Master of Science (MSc) and Diploma of Imperial College (DIC) in Hydrology and Water Resources Management both from Imperial College London. During his studies, he received scholarships and awards including six scholarships from the Cypriot and Greek State Foundations for his academic achievements, the Demetrios, Constantinos and Vasileios Kontodemos prize from NTUA and the prize for poster presentation of Imperial College London.

Sophronides has been awarded piano (Grade 8) and theory of music diplomas with distinction from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). For his talented and outstanding performance, Sophronides has participated for five consecutive years at the National Concerts of the British Council. He has also a diploma in book-keeping and accounts with distinction from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).

Sophronides' major research interests include spatial planning and assessment, regional development, urban planning, participatory planning, scenario planning, development of decision support systems, geographical analysis, spatial statistics, sustainable development, Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs), analysis and risk management for extreme events, energy policy, renewable sources of energy, surface and underground hydrology, time series analysis of hydrological events, water resources management, environmental systems, flood management systems, hydraulic models, hydraulic simulations. Sophronides is a member of various professional and scientific bodies in Cyprus, Greece and the United Kingdom.
